Our Mission

Tails of the City Animal Rescue is a no-kill, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, an all-volunteer, non-profit, no-kill organization dedicated to the abatement of pet overpopulation, the re-homing of animals in need, and the prevention of abuse and neglect of domestic animals through humane education.

About Us

We are a group of dedicated volunteers donating their time, energy, hearts and souls to rescuing and placing pets that would otherwise be euthanized at our local shelters. We also extend our hand to help animals that are lost or cruelly discarded to run the streets of Los Angeles. It is a long road from “rescue to placement”. Our philosophy is “no-kill” which, to us means that the animals have a home with us for as long as it takes to place them. We never give up on an animal, whether they are seniors, have special medical needs, have been abused or neglected, or have a particular behavioral issue. We try to find the best home possible for them. Animals don’t end up in rescue because they had a wonderful beginning, but we try to make the rest of their lives as wonderful as they deserve. We run entirely on donations, and so are committed to fundraising for all our expenses for boarding, training, and medical care. Your donation, no matter how small, impacts the lives of our animals in a very big way.

What we do

Rescue dogs need time. All of the animals that come into our fold require medical attention. All have upper-respiratory illness from the shelter, some have skin conditions, ear or eye infections or need dental work, some are injured and require surgery. Usually we can get them in “adoptable condition” within 2-4 weeks – once all acute medical problems are addressed. Some need to be spayed or neutered, some need vaccines, all need microchips. During this time the dog is also being evaluated. Is the dog housebroken? Is he dog friendly? Is he child friendly? Are there behavioral issues to deal with? Are there any chronic medical conditions? Special diets, etc… We try whenever possible to place our animals into foster homes. We also board our animals at good kennels that offer a part-time “cage-free” environment. Trainers & handlers socialize our dogs with other dogs, so that their time with us is a positive experience – playgroups as a sort of rehabilitation time, making the un- adoptable now adoptable. It is not unusual to have our animals with us for many months waiting for the exact right loving home. In the meantime, they learn to become a valuable member of our family, and we learn many life lessons from each one. Once placed our mission does not end. We follow up to ensure the match between dog and family is secure and all parties are happy. We help with referrals to vet care, daycare, dog walking services, training and boarding. We also have the ultimate safety net for our dogs – we always welcome them back should the need arise. It is our mission to not only rescue these animals but to do whatever necessary to get them… on the road from “rescue to placement.
